Affordable smartphone brand Alcatel has launched a new kids' smartwatch. The wearable allows parents to stay in contact with their kids and find them when they need to, without giving their child a smartphone. The Alcatel Family Watch is available exclusively through Vodafone.
The Family Watch is designed to provide the benefits of a smartphone to young children and their parents, without associated worries around social media, distracting games and apps, access inappropriate content online and more.
The Alcatel Family Watch comes with 3G mobile connectivity, the ability for your child to send and receive calls and messages to pre-authorised contacts, GPS tracking so you can find your child when you need to and an SOS button for your child to use in case of an emergency.
The watch supports geofencing, meaning you can set up "safe zones" in your neighbourhood and be notified if your child moves outside of them. It also comes with to-do list and reminder functions, IP67 water and dust resistance, and a battery life of up to two days per charge.
The watch is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 platform and is controlled via the TLCMove app for Android and iPhone.
The Family Watch is available through Vodafone on a plan for $15 per month which includes $5 monthly repayments on the device over 36 months, plus unlimited talk and text and 1GB of data. You can also choose to pay off the watch over 24 months for $7.50 per month, or over 12 months for $15 per month.
The plan is contract-free on the basis that if you want to leave, you can do so at any time without penalty. You just need to pay out the remaining value of the device. The watch is also available for purchase outright through Vodafone for $180.
