Vodafone is shaking up unlimited mobile data with its new ‘Infinite Data Plans’ that give you faster capped speeds after you run through your data allowance.
In 2018 Vodafone eliminated excess data charges and offer unlimited data on mobile via its Red Plus Plans. These plans came with the catch that once your regular data allowance has been used your download speeds are slowed to just 1.5Mbps.
The provider’s new Infinite Plans are split into three tiers - Lite, Super and Ultra - and give access to download speeds of 2Mbps, 10Mbps or 25Mbps when you exceed your included monthly allowance.
Plans under $50 - dubbed Lite and Lite+ - will get a small boost up to 2Mbps maximum download speeds. Super Plans under $70 will be able to access 10Mbps, and the Ultra Plan coming in at $120 will get 25Mbps download speeds on infinite data.
Currently the provider is offering up to $20 off monthly plan fees for the life of your plan if you sign up with a phone before October 13, or for the first 12 months if you go SIM Only. Lite and Lite+ plans also get 20GB and 10GB bonus data respectively, for as long as you stay connected on the plan on both options
Here is a closer look at what is included in each plan including discounts and promotions.
| Plan | Price with discount | Included data | Infinite data speeds | Unlimited talk & text | International calls |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $40 Lite | $35 | 10GB + 20GB bonus | 2Mbps | Yes | None |
| $45 Lite+ | $40 | 30GB + 10GB bonus | 2Mbps | Yes | 100 mins - Zone 1 |
| $55 Super | $45 | 60GB | 10Mbps | Yes | 1000 mins - Zone 1 100 mins - Zone 2 |
| $65 Super+ | $55 | 100GB | 10Mbps | Yes | Unlimited - Zone 1 200 mins - Zone 2 |
| $120 Ultra | $100 | 150GB | 25Mbps | Yes | Unlimited - Zone 1 300 mins - Zone 2 |
25Mbps is nothing to scoff at, it’s more than enough to keep two people happily connected even if you do manage to blow through 150GB during the month, but the price of the Ultra plan almost supersedes the benefits.
For comparison, a data allowance of 150GB on a Red Plus Plan costs just $80 per month which is $20 less than the Infinite plan with the discount. An extra $20 for unlimited data isn’t a bad deal but in order to take advantage of the extra infinite download speeds you’d need to get through 150GB first.
One way is to watch 21 hours of 4K Netflix, and only after that will you begin to see value for your money. Is it doable? Absolutely! But it’s unlikely.
The Super and Lite plans compare better to the Red Plus alternatives. You’ll get a better data-to-dollar price with the discounts applied, but if you happened to miss out then you'll be looking at around a $5 premium on Super plans for an extra 8.5Mbps download speeds.
Infinite plans won't replace the Red Plus Plans currently on the market, but if you do want a Red Plus Plan you'll need to request it specifically in store or through live chat as they are no longer available online.
As always you’ll be able to bundle up to five Vodafone plans together to qualify for a total monthly discount of up to 20% off your bill. Like Red Plus Plans, once these are bundled you will be able to share data across the connected SIM cards, however infinite data at these extra speeds are not shareable. Each SIM will be locked to the unlimited data speed associated with that particular account.
