As of today, Telstra has rescinded 5G network access on all but one of its prepaid recharges.
Up until now the provider has allowed all its prepaid customers with compatible devices to trial its 5G network for free. Now however, all customers not utilising an active $60 recharge will be limited to Telstra’s 4G network.
Customers with active recharges below this value will continue to have access to the network until their current recharge expires.
A Telstra spokesperson told WhistleOut that 5G access is being limited to higher tiered plans to ensure customers have the data they need in order to experience faster speeds on Telstra’s 5G network.
This model is mirrored in postpaid plans as well, with only plans costing $65 per month or more gaining access to the network.
Typically a 4G connection ranges between 20Mbps and 50Mbps download speeds, although we have seen speeds of up to 300Mbps on Telstra 4G. Comparatively speaking, we’ve seen Telstra 5G achieved around 650Mbps while testing the 5G Wi-Fi Pro modem. At its best, that means you can download 1GB of data in 28 seconds on Telstra 4G, or the same in 13 seconds on 5G.
Naturally speeds will vary depending on the device and proximity to the tower, but 5G will generally be between two and six times speedier than 4G.
