Telstra has a new way of paying for your prepaid phone plan, starting at just $1 per day. Dubbed Day2Day prepaid, the inclusions start at 100MB of data per day, unlimited talk and text, and unlimited data at Telstra Air Wi-Fi hotspots across Australia.
The minimum recharge is $5, and you're then billed $1 at the start of each day, regardless of the inclusions you use. If you use more than 100MB of data in a day, you'll get an automatic $1 top-up with an extra 100MB.
You're also able to make unlimited international calls to one of 10 select countries for an extra $1 per day, including New Zealand, Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, the UK, and the USA. International calls are billed per destination. For example, $1 will be deducted from your credit when you make your first call to Canada in a given day, and then another $1 will be deducted if you call Singapore on the same day.
All Day2Day inclusions expire at midnight each day and do not roll over.
While Day2Day prepaid isn't great for data lovers, it's currently the cheapest way to get unlimited talk and text on Telstra. You're looking at $28 per 28 days, which is a slight saving on Telstra's $30 recharge, which also covers 28 days. The $30 recharge does however have more data - 1.5GB per recharge, and an extra 1.5GB to use between 8pm and 8am. Telstra's $30 recharge also gets you data-free music streaming through Apple Music, and data-free live sport.
Telstra's Day2Day prepaid is quite similar to Optus' Daily Plus prepaid, but there's a few key differences. Optus charges a minimum of $2 per day, but won't charge you until you've made your first call, sent your first text message, or used your first bit of data, whereas Telstra bills you every day. Optus also gives you 500MB per day as the base inclusion, up from Telstra's 100MB.
