Galaxy S20+

Samsung's next flagship smartphone is right around the corner, with the manufacturer set to make the big reveal on February 12. But while we were expecting to see a Galaxy S11, leaked images suggest Samsung is giving up on sequential numbering and going straight to 20.

XDA Developers today published what appears to be the first real world photos of Samsung's next generation smartphone, and the phone's start up screen confirms the Galaxy S20 name. In this case, Galaxy S20+ 5G.

The photos also confirm that the Galaxy S20+ will have a similar hole-punch front-facing camera to the Galaxy Note 10, four rear-facing cameras coupled with a flash and what could be a microphone, and a display with a less prominent curve than what we've seen on past Samsung smartphones. In addition, it appears that Samsung has killed off the dedicated Bixby button that was present on the Galaxy S10 family.

The Galaxy S20+ is expected to be the middle child in Samsung's upcoming trio of devices, flanked by a Galaxy S20 and a Galaxy S20 Ultra. The trio should all share a similar design and set to feature 120Hz displays.

A conventional smartphone has a 60Hz refresh rate. This means the panel on a conventional smartphone can display 60 images per second, versus 120 images per second on Samsung's upcoming devices. This should make all motion on an S20 look smoother - something that should be especially noticeable when it comes to animations and scrolling through apps.

The Galaxy S20 and S20+ should be pretty similar other than size. Leaks suggest the standard S20 will have either a 6.2-inch or 6.4-inch screen, while the S20+ will have a larger 6.7-inch display. Both will be available in 4G-only or 5G models, but it's not yet clear whether we'll see every option locally. In terms of cameras, it sounds like the pair will have similar or identical camera configurations featuring a 12MP primary sensor, a telephoto lens, ultra-wide angle lens, and macro lens.

As the name might suggest, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is expected to be the top-end device in the range. It will only be available in a 5G variant, the screen is expected to measure in at 6.9 inches, and it's camera configuration is tipped to feature a 108MP primary camera and a periscope lens with either 5x or 10x optical zoom, similar to what we saw in the Huawei P30 Pro and OPPO Reno 5G.

We don't know too much about pricing yet, but for reference, the Galaxy S10 family was priced as follows at launch:

  • Galaxy S10e: $1,199
  • Galaxy S10: $1,349
  • Galaxy S10+: $1,499
  • Galaxy S10 5G: $1,999

Of course, we'll have the full details on the morning of February 12 when Samsung official reveals the Galaxy S20 family.
