
Samsung today announced the Australian availability of the Galaxy A71 5G, it's cheapest 5G smartphone to date. Priced at $899 outright, the device is part of Samsung's A Series - handsets Samsung considers less premium and more affordable than its flagship Galaxy S range.
For comparison, the outright cost of an entry-level Galaxy S20 5G is $1,499. Opting for the Galaxy A71 5G instead represents a $500 saving. It's also slightly cheaper than last year's Galaxy A90 5G, which launched at $1,049. While this makes it cheapest 5G phone we've seen so far, you can get currently get Xiaomi's Mi Mix 3 5G for $699 through JB Hi-Fi thanks to a discount.
Key specifications for the Galaxy A71 5G include a 6.7-inch 1080p+ display, an Exynos 980 processor, 128GB of expandable storage, 6GB of RAM, and a 4,500mAh battery. The rear-facing camera configuration is made up of a 64MP primary lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, a 5MP macro lens, and a 5MP depth lens.
You'll be able to get the Galaxy A71 5G from May 20 through Samsung's online store, as well as select telcos. Samsung has yet to confirm who will be ranging the A71 5G.

The Galaxy A71 5G is being joined by the Galaxy A31, a $499 handset sitting at the lower-end of the Samsung range.
Key specifications for the Galaxy A31 include a 6.4-inch 1080p display, an MediaTek Helio P65 processor, and a 5,000mAh battery. We're waiting for confirmation as to whether the local variant will have 4GB of RAM paired with 64GB of expandable storage, or 6GB of RAM with 128GB of expandable storage. The rear-facing camera configuration is made up of a 4MP primary lens, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 5MP macro lens, and a 5MP depth lens.
You'll be able to get the Galaxy A31 from May 18 through Samsung's online store, and major retailers including JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, and The Good Guys.
