The Reno 5G might have only just been announced, but OPPO is already teasing what could be its next smartphone. The company today took to Twitter to share a video of a device with an "under-display" selfie camera. Instead of using an iPhone-like notch, a Galaxy S10-like camera cut out, or a pop-up slider like on its own Reno, OPPO has seemingly managed to hide the selfie camera on this yet to be announced smartphone under the screen.
For those seeking the perfect, notchless smartphone screen experience – prepare to be amazed. ??

In the video, the screen appears to be a standard display. The user then opens the camera app, which causes a small outline to appear where you'd normally expect a selfie camera to be. A finger is then waved back and forth over the space, which registers on the camera.
This kind of technology would allow for an uninterrupted edge-to-edge screen design without having to resort to a pop-up camera. While pop-up cameras can also do the trick, their mechanical nature can make water-proofing harder and add more potential for breakage.
The video was first shared on Weibo by OPPO VP Brian Shen.
"At this stage, it’s difficult for under-display cameras to match the same results as normal cameras, there’s bound to be some loss in optical quality," said Shen. "But no new technology jumps to perfection right away."
OPPO has yet to provide any details around when this technology will make it to a commercially available device.
