After being pushed back by about a month due to COVID-19 related delays, the reinvented Motorola RAZR is now available locally at an outright price of $2,699. The device is available through Motorola's online store and JB Hi-Fi, but at this stage it looks like online is your only option when it comes to JB.
Telstra is also set to offer the RAZR on a plan, but has yet to provide an update as to when this might happen.
The RAZR uses similar technology to the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate XS, but the design is quite different. Instead of opening out to be a tablet size, the RAZR has a standard-sized smartphone screen - measuring in at 6.2-inches - that folds down into a smaller form-factor to better fit in pockets. Essentially, a foldable as a flip-phone.
If you are interested in the new RAZR, it is worth being aware of the durability concerns surrounding the device. US-based tech publication Input reported that the screen on its device started peeling at the fold, while CNET found the phone broke after 27,000 folds. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Fold broke after 120,000 folds in the same experiment.
It's also worth noting that the RAZR isn't the only device of its kind: Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip has an almost identical (albeit less retro-inspired) form-factor. The Galaxy Z Flip will be available from April 3, and launch for $500 less than the RAZR, priced at $2,199 outright. In addition to a lower price point, the Galaxy Z Flip also touts higher-end hardware than the RAZR.
