Motorola will bring the reinvented RAZR to Australia in January next year, according to the company's GM Sales APAC for Mature Markets, Danny Adamopoulos.
"[The RAZR] will also be coming on sale in Australia in January, but you'll have to wait and see on the local pricing and who's going to take it," said Adamopoulos, talking to 2GB.
In addition, Adamopoulos confirmed that the RAZR won't have a physical SIM slot, likely making it the first eSIM-only smartphone to launch in Australia. Instead of physically inserting a SIM card, you'll use the RAZR to scan a QR code to add your plan.
At present, Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone all support eSIM phone plans. However, Australia's MVNOs currently don't, which means RAZR users might be limited in terms of which phone plan they can use. Read more about eSIM here.
While Adamopoulos wasn't able to disclose Australian pricing, the RAZR will cost USD$1,499 internationally, excluding tax. That converts to about $2,200 locally.
The RAZR uses similar technology to the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X, but the design is quite different. Instead of opening out to be a tablet size, the RAZR has a standard-sized smartphone screen - measuring in at 6.2-inches - that folds down into a smaller form-factor to better fit in pockets. Essentially, a foldable in a flip phone form-factor. On the front, you'll find a smaller 2.7-inch display that shows notifications, the time, and music controls.
