Motorola today announced the local availability of its first 5G smartphone to hit Australia, the Motorola Edge. The phone will hit stores today, priced at $999 outright, making it one of the latest phones to compete for the sub-$1,000 crown.
The Edge is named after its aggressively curved screen, which is bent by almost 90-degrees. This makes the curvature a lot more pronounced than what we've seen on most curved handsets, other than Huawei's Mate 30 Pro. While the curved display is mostly aesthetic, it will light up for notifications and can be used for virtual shoulders when gaming.
Key specifications for the Edge include a 6.7-inch 1080p+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a Snapdragon 765G processor, 5G connectivity, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage, and a 4,500mAh battery. The phone has four rear-facing cameras: a 64MP primary lens, 8MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, a 16MP ultra-wide lens, and a Time-of-Flight lens. Notably, it also has a headphone jack.
You can pick up the Motorola Edge from retailers including JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, Officeworks, and Motorola's own online store. No telcos are ranging the Motorola Edge. Anyone who purchases the Edge at launch can redeem a free pair of Motorola VerveBuds 110 true wireless headphones through the Motorola website.
While a beefier version of the Motorola Edge - the Motorola Edge+ - is available overseas, it won't be coming to Australia at this stage.
The Motorola Edge will be going head-to-head with a host of semi-premium devices priced under $1,000, such as the OPPO Find X2 Neo and the LG Velvet. The Find X2 Neo is also priced at $999, but has twice the amount of internal storage and better cameras. The Velvet is $100 cheaper, and while missing the 90Hz display, has wireless charging and IP68 water-resistance. The Edge, however, is easily the most unique when it comes to aesthetic.
No matter which way you look at, competition at the sub-$1,000 price-point is fiercer than ever.
