Apple announced the smallest member of the iPhone family this week, and Australia’s telcos have responded with some big discounts on BIG data plans to go with it.
Vodafone is slinging 200GB for $50 per month, Optus has 500GB for $65, and Telstra has 180GB for $65. These are all massive amounts of data for one person, but luckily each of these telcos also offer a way for you to share your hoard of GB around as well. Here are these plans at a glance, but we’ll delve deeper into them below.
Before we go into the plans, let's take a look at what you need to know about Apple’s latest device, the iPhone SE.
The iPhone SE is a pint sized device that not only fits in your pocket, but goes easy on it as well. Dubbed as Apple’s budget offering, the phone starts at just $719 for the 64GB version making it the most affordable new phone that does Apple things.
It is ostensibly a stripped down version of an iPhone 13, in the body of an iPhone 8. It still has a home button, and has just one rear camera at 12MP. In previous SE models we’ve found that the singular rear camera holds up however, and even out performs some Android devices. Despite this the phone uses Apple’s fastest processor to date, meaning it will be just as zippy as the latest iPhone flagships.
This iteration of the SE comes with 5G connectivity, and Apple says that its battery will last longer than its predecessor.
Now onto the plans.
Vodafone’s $55 Super Plan now comes with 200GB of data, and a $5 discount for the life of your plan.
200GB is more than enough for one person, but if you have multiple Vodafone Infinite or Plus Plans on one account you can share your data with every SIM on the account. Everyone’s max speed data will pool and you’ll all use data from that one bank, but if you collectively run out then you’ll all stay connected at capped speeds. Lite plans have infinite data capped at 2Mbps, Super plans capped at 10Mbps, and Ultra plans at 25Mbps.
Bundled plans also yield an additional discount with Vodafone. You can bundle up to five services together, and you’ll get a 5% discount (up to a maximum of 20%) for every additional service after the first.
Optus has a Promo Plan that usually costs $115 per month, but right now it is down to $65 for 500GB of data per month.
This discount lasts for your first 12 months with the provider, but even when the price reverts back after that period you’re not stuck with it. Optus’ plans are all contract-free, so if you don’t want to pay $115 per month you can always drop down to a cheaper plan.
The provider also allows Data Sharing across multiple plans on one account. So similar to Vodafone, as long as the plans are either Optus Choice Plus, Optus Choice Plus Data, Optus Plus Family or Optus Plus Kids plans, you’ll all pull from the same data bank.
If you manage to get through your 500GB of data then Optus has Endless Data, capped at speeds of 1.5Mbps. You’ll also get access to Optus Sport and OS Fitness for the life of your plan.
Telstra’s deal has the least amount of data, but 180GB per month isn’t anything to scoff at. Currently Big T has discounted its Extra Large Upfront Plan, bringing the price down to $65 per month for your first 12 months with the telco. After this time the price will revert to $115 but similarly to Optus you can always change your plan before getting stung with the price rise.
Upfront plans with Telstra can share data between up to 10 services on the same account, so if you’ve got a big family you’ll be well covered. These plans operate a little differently than your traditional postpaid plan though. Instead of paying at the end of the month, you’ll pay upfront at the start of the month. It’s like a prepaid model but using a postpaid system.
Like the other major telcos, Telstra offers unlimited capped speed data if you get through your monthly allowance. Telstra’s shapes speeds to 1.5Mbps.
