One month on from its big unveiling as part of Google’s I/O developer conference, the next version of Android has begun to make its way into the hands of consumers.
According to a blog by Google’s VP and GM of Android Seang Chau, Android 17 will be rolling out to the company’s own Pixel hardware from this week, with other eligible devices set to follow in the next few months.
Although the handful of Android 17 features tied to the launch of Google’s new Gemini Intelligence AI tech won’t arrive until later down the line, that subtraction is being offset by a list of new features being introduced, including a few things that weren’t shown off last month.
One of the more noteworthy additions in Android 17 that the blog post details is a new foldable gaming mode. When enabled, this option offers a 50/50 layout that puts the actions on the top half of the screen and the controls on the bottom.
In addition, Chau noted that Google has also made a number of improvements to gaming performance across Android writ large by making memory management more efficient.
Another Android 17 feature that wasn’t shown off back in May is Bubbles. This feature promises to make split-screening a little bit smoother by turning any app into a floating window. In practice, this feature doesn’t seem all that dissimilar to similar features that manufacturers like OPPO and Xiaomi have introduced within their own respective Android skins in recent years, but it is neat to see it included as a standard going forward.
