Priced at $1,799 and $1,849 respectively, the OPPO Find X5 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra are the two priciest flagship Android phones you can buy in Australia. And as we know, when you buy a high-end device, a lot of what you're paying for is the camera.
As such, it's natural to want the best when you're spending top dollar. To help you decide, we've put the Find X5 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra head-to-head in a camera showdown. Every photo in this story was taken using automatic settings.
Before we start, here are the key takeaways:
- When it comes to the primary lens, the Find X5 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra both can take impressive photos. In good lighting conditions, there's very little difference between images the phones take. The Samsung does tend to be a little brighter, however.
- This trend continues in low light on the primary lens. The Galaxy S22 Ultra takes brighter images than the Find X5 Pro, but this comes at the expense of detail. Images can be noticeably noisier too.
- The Find X5 Pro ultra-wide lens is best in class. It takes sharper photos with less blur around the edges of the shot. It also takes more detailed, cleaner shots in low light. This also results in a better macro mode on the Find X5 Pro.
- The Galaxy S22 Ultra is the winner when it comes to zoom. Not only is it more versatile thanks to having both a 3x lens and a 10x lens, the overall image quality is better. The Find X5 Pro only has a 2x zoom lens.
- The Galaxy S22 Ultra also edges out the Find X5 Pro when it comes to selfies - especially in tricky lighting.
Find X5 Pro vs. Galaxy S22 Ultra: Primary Lens
Both the Find X5 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra boast impressive primary lenses, at least when it comes to megapixel count. The Find X5 Pro features a 50MP primary lens, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra features a 108MP primary lens.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

These photos are pretty similar at first glance, but the Find X5 Pro has picked up more camera noise on the washing machine and gas canister in the background of the photo. The Samsung didn't have this issue, but the highlights on Billie and the sliding door are a little too bright.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Both these photos were taken during a black out under candlelight. The pair are similarly bright, but the image from the OPPO is just that little bit sharper.
OPPO Find X5 Pro

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

There's very little difference between these two photos, but the chips in the Find X5 Pro photo are just a little more golden. It really comes down to personal preference.

These photos were taken in portrait mode using a Nicholas Cage cutout, mostly because I had one on hand. Both did a good job of isolating the subject, but the Galaxy S22 Ultra blew out the window behind the shot whereas the Find X5 Pro didn't.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

With a human subject in more adverse lightning, the Galaxy S22 Ultra was the clear winner. The overall shot is brighter, and it did a better job at not blurring whisps of hair.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

In these images, the Galaxy S22 Ultra managed to take a brighter photo than the Find X5 Pro, but it's less detailed and the noise is more pronounced.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Continuing the trend, the Galaxy S22 Ultra took a brighter photo than the OPPO here, but at the cost of overexposing Australian icon Daryl Braithwaite. He looks just a bit more natural in the Find X5 Pro photo. Well at least as natural as you can under RSL lighting.

When trying to take a broader shot of the stage, both phones struggled to get a uniformly sharp shot. You can see elements of camera blur in both, but it's slightly more pronounced in the Find X5 Pro image.

Both these photos were taken during a blackout with no ambient lightning. Both feature a high degree of noise and artefacts. The OPPO image is slightly cleaner, however.

In good lighting, the pair of phones capture colour in a very similar way.

Another low light shot where the Samsung image is brighter, but the OPPO is clearer. It's much easier to read the text on the vinyl sleeves in the Find X5 Pro image.

There's almost no difference between these images, but the drinks were delicious.
Find X5 Pro vs. Galaxy S22 Ultra: Ultra-Wide Lens
When it comes to ultra-wide lenses, the Find X5 Pro is best in class with a 50MP lens. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has a more conventional 12MP lens.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

This pair of images are pretty similar, but the OPPO shot is just that little bit sharper. In the Samsung photo, you can notice some blurring - especially in the trees on either side of the frame.
OPPO Find X5 Pro

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

The same holds true in this set of photos. The Find X5 Pro image is just that bit sharper.
OPPO Find X5 Pro

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

The Galaxy S22 Ultra tends to take brighter images with its ultra-wide lens, but the actual image quality is a big step down from the Find X5 Pro. The images feature more noise and artefacts, and are less detailed.
OPPO Find X5 Pro

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Both the Find X5 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra can use their ultra-wide lenses to get macro shots. The Find X5 Pro is a clear winner here, allowing you to get closer to your subject and capture more detail.
Find X5 Pro vs. Galaxy S22 Ultra: Zoom Lens
When it comes to zoom, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has it in spades. On the back you'll find a 10MP 3x zoom lens and 10MP 10x zoom lens. The Find X5 Pro has just a single 13MP 3x zoom lens.
When it comes to zoom in low light, neither phone does great - instead of using the zoom lens itself, they tend to crop the primary lens (or sometimes the 3x lens in Samsung's case). This results in blurry images that aren't great. As a general rule, low light zoom just isn't a good option.
OPPO Find X5 Pro

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

These shots were taken at 2x zoom and 3x zoom respectively - the phone's default magnification. Not only does the Samsung get in closer, it takes a clearer image. The Find X5 Pro also overexposed the sky, removing all clouds from the shot.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

When you jump to 10x zoom, the winner is obvious. Since the Samsung has a 10x zoom lens, it can take a sharp, detailed picture. On the other hand, the OPPO is relying on software to get to 10x zoom, so the image looks artificial by comparison.
OPPO Find X5 Pro

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Both these images were taken at 10x zoom, and naturally, the Samsung captured the better image.
Find X5 Pro vs. Galaxy S22 Ultra: Selfie Camera
tWhen it comes to selfie cameras, the Find X5 Pro has a 32MP front-facing camera and the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 40MP.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Both phones can take a pretty decent selfie regardless of your subject, but the Galaxy S22 Ultra does better with challenging lighting conditions. The sun was behind me in the above shots, but the overall image still looks pretty natural in the Samsung image. The lens flare is also much more pronounced in the OPPO shot.
