WiFi 7 may have only just gone mainstream, but WiFi 8 is already on the horizon. Network hardware manufacturer TP-Link has announced it will be launching its first WiFi 8 router, the Archer 8, before the end of this year.
Details are scant so far, but TP-Link says the Archer 8 will have a "minimalist" aesthetic with "performance-focused engineering". The company has yet to reveal a full design, but shared teaser images like the one above.
Instead, TP-Link has focused on espousing the consumer benefits of WiFi 8. In initial testing, TP-Link says WiFi 8 can support 33% higher throughput than WiFi 7, and improve performance across multi-floor dwellings by up to 30%. WiFi 8 should also support stronger coverage at longer distances from the router.
TP-Link plans to launch the Archer 8 router in October, but Australia-specific details like pricing have yet to be confirmed. This will be followed by the Deco 8 mesh system in quarter one of 2027, and a Roam 8 travel router in quarter two.
While WiFi 8 may promise improvements over WiFi 7, users will also need WiFi 8 devices to get the most out of the new standard. We're yet to see any major manufacturers announce WiFi 8 phones or computers.
