NBN Co has unveiled a new partnership with Project Kuiper, Amazon’s low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet network.
The LEO service, consisting of over 3,200 satellites, will deliver faster speeds at lower latency to regional, rural and remote communities.
Project Kuiper currently cites potential download speeds of up to 400Mbps on its largest model, while Satellite NBN currently maxes out at 100Mbps.
It will be available to 300,000 premises within the existing geostationary (GEO) satellite footprint, from mid-2026. The rollout and beta-testing will start in Tasmania before heading north.
These homes and businesses are currently serviced by NBN's satellite service, consisting of the two Sky Muster GEO satellites, which are due to be decommissioned in 2032.
Amazon began research and development for Project Kuiper back in 2018 and began full-scale deployment of its satellite constellation earlier this year, with 78 satellites already in orbit across three launches.
NBN Co CEO Ellie Sweeney said, "Transitioning from two geostationary satellites to a constellation of LEO satellites will help to ensure the NBN network is future-ready and delivers the best possible broadband experience to customers living and working in parts of regional, rural and remote Australia."
Exact pricing and speeds are yet to be determined as NBN says it will need to consult with rural stakeholders, regulators, and retail service providers. It will look at exploring both professional and self-installation options.
The Sky Muster service will remain until the transition is completed.
Satellite internet has been a competitive area since Starlink launched in Australia in 2021. Satellite NBN has been steadily losing customers due to a mix of Starlink uptake, as well as Fixed Wireless NBN upgrades.
Both services offer faster speeds at lower latency than what Sky Muster can support.
The total number of Sky Muster customers dropped by almost 10% to around 78,000 services as of March 2025, down from 86,000 services the same time last year.
