NBN Co is done upgrading the Fixed Wireless portion of its network, meaning around 800,000 homes and businesses on the technology type have the potential for faster download speeds.
As part of the upgrades, all premises in the Fixed Wireless NBN footprint are able to get speeds of 100Mbps on Fixed Wireless Plus plans, up from 75Mbps.
There are also two faster speed tiers that were introduced in the middle of last year. A 250Mbps plan is available to 90% off the footprint, and a 400Mbps option is available to 80%.
NBN Co is overprovisioning these plans by 50% on a wholesale level, which means faster speeds may be available to some customers, when network conditions allow. This means plans may be able to burst to 150Mbps, 375Mbps, or 600Mbps, depending on the speed tier.
An NBN Co spokesperson told WhistleOut that is up to individual providers to pass on the overprovisioned speeds to customers. As such, not everyone may see speeds that go higher than the "plan maximum".
While these faster Fixed Wireless plans have been available to resellers for over half a year now, we've not seen them sold widely yet. There are only a handful of NBN providers offering the 250Mbps and 400Mbps options.
Here are 400Mbps Fixed Wireless NBN plans in the WhistleOut database:
When a customer orders one of the new plans, they may need new equipment installed to support the speeds. If this is the case, the turnaround time should be around two weeks.
