Vodafone today announced a new content partnership with video-on-demand service Stan with plans to offer the service to its customers in the near future.
While the telco has detailed how it plans to include Stan in its mobile phone plans, it is expected to work in the same way partnerships with Spotify and Fairfax Media currently operate — where customers get a free subscription to the service of their choice for the duration of their Vodafone contract.
With Stan costing $10 per month, it is similar in price to monthly music account with Spotify and a digital subscription to the Sydney Morning Herald. At the same price, it is likely Stan will be integrated into Red plans in the same way as Spotify and Fairfax subscriptions.
The deal should act as a leg-up for Stan, too, with competition for video-on-demand services to be in full swing in a month’s time when U.S. based Netflix launches in Australia. Stan offers a very similar service to Netflix, but has its work cut out in establishing itself with the mainstream Australian TV audience.
“Stan is a fantastic addition to Vodafone’s leading range of premium content. The reason we’ve chosen to partner with Stan is simple: we believe it offers Australian customers the best range of local and international TV and movies,” said Inaki Berroeta, CEO Vodafone Australia.
Stan customers currently enjoy Better Call Saul, the prequel spin-off to the hugely popular Breaking Bad, and Channel 9’s series Gallipoli. Stan also features classic and recent release movie titles and is currently hosting the entire James Bond movie back catalogue.
