It started with free access to Spotify Premium ($11.99 per month). Now Vodafone is giving you the choice of a subscription to The Sydney Morning Herald or The Age, just in case music streaming is not your thing.

The options will be split in to packages, within which are sub-options. The Entertainment pack section currently only includes Spotify, which may be an indication that we’ll see some kind of Netflix or Stan inclusions come their releases in 2015.

The News pack lets you choose between your SMH or The Age subscriptions. Both the Entertainment and News packs are only available for upgrading or new Vodafone Red Plan customers.

What you get

The News Pack will give you access to unlimited articles on either smh.com.au or theage.com.au, as well as a digital replica of the daily print version of the newspaper. This replica is identical to the folding paper kind, except that you can view it on your phone or tablet.

The subscription is not indefinite. The $70 Red Plan will net you a 6 month subscription, while the $80 and $100 Red Plans will get you 12 months of free access. That means for the last half of your 24 month contract you’ll half to fork out for the subscription yourself, or cancel it if you don’t feel like paying.

The tantalisingly-named Entertainment pack will give you 6 months of Spotify Premium on the $70 Red Plan, 12 months on the $80 Red Plan and a full 24 months on the $100 Red Plan. Spotify Premium gives you access to stream thousands of songs with no ads, share music with friends and even download songs for offline use while you’re out and about.

Subscription savvy

Vodafone’s new tact of offering complimentary subscription services to its customers is a smart move. Providing the choice between various services is a stroke of brilliance. Where before you may or may not get any use out of your Spotify Premium access, you now get to tailor your freebies a little more to your needs.

The fact that we have two separate packs, one of which offers currently only one service, suggests that even more options are on the way. We’re hoping for a Netflix inclusion. That would certainly get Vodafone back in the good books once it finally launches Down Under next year. Failing that we’d be happy with Stan.
