Aussie telco customers will put unused data to good use when Virgin Mobile holds a series of online auctions over the next month.
Between April 15 and May 15, anyone in Australia with a phone account and unused data can bid for a variety of items using the amount of data they had remaining on their most recent bill. Auctions will be run daily on the company’s Facebook page.
To bid, people will post a data amount in the comments of a Facebook post each day. The winner is the person who bids the most of their unused data. If multiple people bid the same amount, the person who bid earliest wins. So you’ll need to set your alarm because the auction will only run between 7pm and 8pm each day.
According to information from Virgin, there's a stack of cool loot up for grabs, including new phones, mini motorbikes, drones and music tickets. The grand-daddy of a prize is a holiday to Wadigi Island in Fiji valued at $43,000. That’s right, the same Wadigi Island that Paris Hilton and Christiano Ronaldo canoodled on back in the day.
And yes, you need to prove that you have unused data to bid with. You can check your balance on your last month’s statement.
This auction is the latest in a long-running Virgin Mobile campaign to try and return some of the value of the data we pay for, but don’t end up using. It launched Data Rollover this time last year and remains the only telco to rollover unused data on post-paid plans.
“At Virgin Mobile we don’t think it’s fair that something they’ve paid for is snatched away," says Philippa Durant, Head of Brand & Customer Marketing at Virgin Mobile.
"They should get a second chance to use it and what better way than through a unique auction that offers the opportunity to live like Sir Richard Branson on your own private island.”
