Optus has today launched new international data roaming and international call add-ons for its Prepaid Epic Data and Prepaid Epic Value plans.
Optus’ new $20 Roam Data add-on allows customers to buy 10GB of roaming data to use in Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK and the USA. Customers will have five days to use the roaming data pack before it expires.
Meanwhile, Optus’ new $5 International Talk add-on gives customers up to 300 minutes of international calls to 50 selected destinations. The international talk add-on comes with a 28-day expiry. The countries you can call with this pack are:
Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Laos, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Pakistan, Paraguay, Phillipines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, UEA, UK, Uraguay, USA, Venezuela and Vietnam.
Of course, customers on Epic Data plans costing $40 or more already get unlimited international calls to 15 destinations, which are: Canada, mainland China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, UK and USA. See our guide for more information about international calls on Optus plans.
The announcement is great news for Optus prepaid customers wanting to take their phone overseas. Previously the only option for roaming with Optus prepaid was to use Extras Credit for pay-as-you-go roaming data charged at $0.50 per MB in what Optus calls Zone 1 countries or $1 per minute in Optus Zone 2 countries.
Of course, this is still the only option if you want to travel outside the selected Roam Data add-on countries. Customers should also be aware that the Roam Data pack doesn’t cover talk or text overseas, which will be charged at the pay-as-you-go rates. These are: $1 per minute to make or receive calls and $0.50 per SMS in Zone 1 countries; or $2 per minute to make or receive calls and $1 per SMS in Zone 2 countries.
If you’re travelling for longer than five days, need to make a lot of calls and texts overseas or aren’t travelling to destinations covered by the pack, you do have other options. See our complete guide to taking your phone overseas for more information.
Both add-on packs are available to customers on Prepaid Epic Data and Prepaid Epic Value plans from today. They can be purchased online via the Optus website or via the My Optus app.
