Spotify today has announced it is bringing its world famous music streaming software to Android-powered watches, adding one very big reason to consider getting Google on your wrist.

The upcoming Spotify app, due out in June, will gives Spotify members the chance to play their music playlists, discover new music and play full albums.

Users will need to maintain a connection to their phones for internet, unless they have a newer wearable with WiFi hardware built-in.

This is great news for music lovers, and for Android Wear in particular. Until now, there have been few options for audio on Google watches; something the devices seem purpose built for. Users could play music through Google’s own Play Music app, but for Spotify members this would have meant having two separate subscriptions for basically the same service.

Android Wear on the rise

Google announced today that there is now 4,000 dedicated Android Wear apps, and Spotify isn’t the only big name business to be getting in on wearables.

Car service Uber also announced it would soon release an app for watches — another great service match for apps that will live on your wrist. Foursquare are also coming to the party, as is a much easier way to ‘check in’.

All in all, the reasons for taking up an Android Wear smartwatch are getting stronger and stronger, and not a moment too soon. With Apple’s watch posing the great competitive threat to date, Google Wear needs these apps to remain a valid alternative.
