Blizzard’s once-beleaguered hero shooter is finally making the jump to mobile.
Announced overnight, Overwatch Rush is being pitched as a top-down take on the hero shooter formula that brings the franchise’s colourful cast of characters to smaller screens.
The perspective has shifted, but the core experience remains very intact, based on the gameplay footage seen below.
According to developer Blizzard Entertainment, Overwatch Rush is being handled by a dedicated team that’s operating separately from the one handling Overwatch proper. In many ways, the setup sounds similar to the one that Riot rely on when it comes to League of Legends and League of Legends: Wild Rift.
“While there remains a lot of work to do, we’re eager to see how players enjoy what we’ve built so far, and to hear from them on what we should focus on in the coming phases of development,” the developer said in a blog post.
The move builds on the larger redemption arc that Blizzard is looking to build around Overwatch following its recent rebrand, which saw Overwatch 2 drop the nomenclature and add five new playable heroes to its roster.
In the weeks since, the hero shooter has bounced back in popularity and set a new all-time high when it comes to its Steam player count. According to Blizzard, Overwatch’s soft-reboot has seen the game’s daily player count continue to grow over its first two weekends, something that has not happened since 2022.
In any case, Blizzard isn’t ready to take sign-ups for Overwatch Rush on either iPhone or Android just yet, but encouraged those looking to take part in upcoming testing for the title to join the official Discord server in the meantime.
