Ahead of a keynote at Spanish tech expo Mobile World Congress, Chinese smartphone manufacturer OPPO is teasing an advance in camera technology its calling the "5X Project". While OPPO isn't giving too much away, it says 5x is "smartphone photography technology that will give users unprecedented ability to capture highly detailed images".
"OPPO’s relentless pursuit of perfection without compromise has given birth to a remarkable technological breakthrough that will change how the world perceives smartphone photography," said OPPO Vice President and Managing Director of International Mobile Business. "This remarkable achievement is the result of an extensive, year-long R&D process, combined with OPPO’s unparalleled expertise in smartphone imaging technology."
Given the name, our guess is 5x could potentially refer to zoom. If OPPO's found a way to work 5x optical zoom into a smartphone, that would be a pretty impressive achievement, especially if it doesn't result in other compromises (such as weight or thickness).
OPPO will make the announcement as part of its Mobile World Congress keynote on the 27th of February at 2pm (Barcelona time). We'll be on the ground and have the latest as it happens.
