Optus has once again come out on top in Opensignal's Mobile Network Experience report. The telco won eight categories outright and tied with Vodafone for a ninth.

The report tracks the performance of the Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone networks across four categories including Overall Experience, 5G Experience, Coverage, and Consistency.

Optus has now led the pack with the fastest average 5G download speeds back-to-back for the sixth time in a row.

The telco's 5G download speed came in at 208.7Mbps which is nearly 14% faster than Opensignal's Telstra users and around 34% faster than Opensignal's Vodafone users. Optus' result was nearly 8% slower than its performance in the previous Opensignal report.

National results - Speed (Mbps)
Overall download speed Overall upload speed 5G Download speed 5G Upload speed
Optus 57.9 7.7 208.7 15.3
Telstra 57.4 7.5 180.1 14.5
Vodafone 68.5 10.8 137.9 15.8

It also led in both the overall and 5G categories for Video Experience, Live Video Experience, and Games Experience. These six categories are scored out of 100 points based on criteria like fast load times, video quality, and latency (the time it takes for data to travel from the server and back).

Optus also won top spot for Consistent Quality (78.8%) and tied with Vodafone for Availability (99.2%) which are scored as a percentage of tests and time respectively.

With the shutdown of Vodafone's 3G network its overall network experience has improved. It won the categories for best overall Download and Upload Speed Experience.

A separate Opensignal study found Vodafone's users are spending more time with 5G. The 3G shutdown means networks are free to redistribute spectrum that was being used to provide 3G coverage to their 5G services which should improve connectivity.

Telstra held on to both category wins for Coverage Experience. Coverage is measured as a geographic coverage of populated areas in Australia in order to capture the experience of typical users. Out of 10 points, it scored 9.5 for Overall Coverage Experience and 6.2 for 5G Coverage Experience.

Opensignal runs tests on devices from a selection of users on each network via its app. The data for this report was collected between January 1 and March 30, 2024.
