Motorola isn't giving up on the modular smartphone dream just yet, having taken the wraps off the Moto Z3 Play overnight. The Moto Z3 Play is the latest device to work with the company's range of Moto Mod accessories. For those not familiar with the term, Moto Mods are essentially hot-swappable accessories that can add features to Z-series phones. Initial Mods included battery packs, a zoom camera, and a portable projector.
While the Moto Z3 Play supports the same accessories as past Z-series phones, it's had a slight aesthetic refresh. The display is now a 6.01-inch extra-tall screen, and the back is now glass rather than aluminium. To ensure Mod compatibility, the Moto Z3 Play shares the same physical footprint as past Z-series devices.
Since Moto Mods cover the back of the phone and the extra-tall display has reduced the amount of space on the front of Moto Z3 Play, Motorola has put a fingerprint reader on the side of the device instead. While this is uncommon, we've seen a similar implementation on a couple of Sony smartphones.
Key specifications for the Moto Z3 Play include a 6.01-inch 1080p+ display, a Snapdragon 636 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of expandable storage, 12MP and 5MP dual rear-facing cameras, and a 3,000mAH battery. It doesn't have a headphone jack.
The Moto Z3 Play will launch at USD$499 internationally with a 2,000mAh Battery Moto Mod bundled in the box. Local pricing and availability has yet to be confirmed, but last year's Moto Z2 Play launched at $699 here, so we wouldn't be surprised to see the Moto Z3 Play come in at a similar price point.
Today's announcement follows the local launch of the Moto G6 and Moto E5.
