The LG K4 is the latest device to join Telstra's family of prepaid smartphones. Retailing for $179, the phone is pitched at a practical all-rounder. The 5MP front-facing camera incorporates a couple of features from LG's pricier phones, including "Gesture Shot", which lets you take a selfie by making a fist to start the shutter timer.
Since the LG K4 is a prepaid device, it's locked to Telstra's network, which means you won't be able to take it to another provider without forking out a bit of extra cash. If you want to unlock it within the first six months, you're looking at an $80 fee. If you're happy to wait, the fee gets cut to $25 after six months. After two years, you'll be able to unlock the phone for free.
In addition to not connecting to other Australian networks, a locked smartphone won't work overseas.
Key specifications for the LG K4 include a 5-inch 480p display, a MediaTek MT6737M processor, 8GB of expandable storage, 1GB of RAM, a 2,500mAh removable battery, and an 8MP rear-facing camera. It runs Android Marshmallow.
The K4's specs aren't terrible for the price-point, but spending just a little more might be a good idea. Kogan's Agora 8 is $199, has the same processor, but doubles storage and RAM to 16GB and 2GB respectively, and has a 720p display rather than 480p. Since it's sold outright, it's not locked to a network. If your budget can stretch a little further, Motorola's $299 Moto G5 is also worth considering.
