2017 iPhone mock-ups

There's been far too much speculation as to what Apple will call it's tenth anniversary iPhone, but it looks like we finally have an answer: iPhone X. iOS developer Steven Troughton-Smith discovered references to iPhone X in the latest version of the iOS 11 firmware, alongside mentions of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

Essentially, the phone everyone's been calling iPhone 8 is set to be named iPhone X, and the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus look like they'll skip the "s" and go straight to iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Confusing, we know. That being said, it still makes more sense than launching an iPhone 8 and iPhone 7s in the same year.

Other names floated for iPhone X included iPhone Edition and iPhone Pro.

iPhone X is set to be the most radical iPhone redesign yet. It looks like Apple will kill off the longstanding home button in exchange for an edge-to-edge OLED display with a small cut out for a speaker and front-facing camera. This will allow Apple to squeeze a 5.8-inch display into a device that's slightly bigger than the current iPhone 7.

Facial recognition is almost certainly being added as a new way to unlock your phone and authenticated Apple Pay payments, but there's been conflicting reports as to whether there'll be a fingerprint reader on the back of the device. The iPhone X will also return to a glass back like the iPhone 4 before it, and as such, support wireless charging. We're expecting to see it cost around $1500.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are expected to be similar in shape to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus and keep 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays, but are set to abandon aluminium for glass backs. Other than beefier specs and better cameras, we're expecting to see the addition of wireless charging. We're expecting to see them to start at roughly the same prices at the current generation models: $1,079 for iPhone 8 and $1,269 for iPhone 8 Plus.

Of course, we'll have all the official details on Wednesday morning, so stay tuned.
