If you already love the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, get ready for the next addition to the series: the long-awaited Samsung Galaxy Note7.

The all-new Note was unveiled today at Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event; skipping over the previously expected 'Note6' title, the 7 is a bigger, better complement to the flagship S7 and S7 edge.

Specs and features

Running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the Note7 comes with a 5.7-inch, 2560x1440 Super AMOLED Dual Edge screen, narrowly curved in the style of the S7 edge.

If you’re in the US, your phone is powered by a Quad-core Snapdragon 820 processor, while international versions of the Note7 feature an Octa-core Exynos. All versions include 4GB of RAM, with 64GB of internal storage and microSD options up to 256GB.

The latest Note features a battery upgrade – 3500 mAh, over the Note5’s 3000 mAh – plus fast charging and Qi wireless and Powermat wireless compatibility. The Note7 also sees Samsung move to the USB-C port standard, as well as introduce Gorilla Glass 5 for improved durability on both front and back.

If wear and tear is a concern, the Note7 comes with an IP68 dust and waterproof rating – meaning you can, theoretically, submerge your handset in up to five feet of water, for up to 30 minutes.

Camera-wise, you’ll get a twelve-megapixel rear lens with Optical Image Stabilisation, and five megapixels in front. Other features include both fingerprint and iris scanners for increased security, and software tweaks including colour scheme changes, a customisable Power Saving Mode, a better camera interface, and much more.

Finally, combating what became an unexpectedly common issue with the previous Note5, Samsung has also ensured that the Note7’s S Pen stylus can’t be inserted backwards this time around – and the S Pen itself, too, is waterproof.

When can I get it?

The Note7 is available to pre-order August 5 from Optus, Telstra, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone (as well as Samsung, Harvey Norman, and JB Hi-Fi), with a total cost of around $1349 AUD to buy outright. All pre-orders will come with a bonus 256GB microSD card, valued at $299.
