Apple will hold its next major product event at 3am on September 10 (AEST), and the iPhone 17 is almost certainly on the cards. In addition, we're expecting new Apple Watches and perhaps a new pair of AirPods.
There are a few changes set for this year's iPhone family. Apple is expected to discontinue its "Plus" model in favour of a super-slim iPhone 17 Air, similar to what Samsung achieved with the Galaxy S25 Edge. Rumours suggest that the iPhone 17 Air will have a 6.6-inch display, but just one rear-facing camera and a smaller battery.
The standard iPhone 17 could finally benefit from a 120Hz refresh rate display, while the the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are tipped to get a re-jigged camera configuration featuring an 8x zoom lens.
Based on past years, we're expecting pre-orders to start on September 12, which would suggest a September 19 release date.
Even if you're not interested in buying an iPhone 17, you should still hold off on buying a new iPhone (unless you spot a particularly good deal). The launch of a new handset means current models will get cheaper. Last year, Apple cut the price of the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Plus, and on the same day it announced the iPhone 16 family.
This year, we're expecting Apple to slash prices on the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 15, and iPhone 15 Plus. The iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max are likely to be discontinued. Vodafone has already run out of iPhone 16 Pro stock, for example.
If this is the case, these models won't get official price cuts, but we'll almost certainly see some solid deals as retailers try and get through the last of their stock.
