The iPhone 16 range is on sale today and there are more than a few ways to get your hands on a new device for less.
To start, Apple has exclusive offers of up to $1,000 off any iPhone (including the entire iPhone 16 family) when you sign up for a Vodafone BYOD plan in an Apple Store.
Vodafone offers three BYOD plans:
- 100GB for $59 per month, save $650 on your iPhone of choice
- 150GB for $69 per month, save $1,000 on your iPhone of choice
- 200GB for $75 per month, save $1,000 on your iPhone of choice
Like Vodafone's regular postpaid plans, you get unlimited calls and texts, $5 per day international roaming, and unlimited data (speeds slowed to 2Mbps when you use up your allowance). You do need to stay connected for 24 months.
If you got the new iPhone 16 (128GB storage variant) it would normally cost $1,399. With the 150GB plan you'd only pay $399, plus $1656 over 24 months in plan fees. That would come to a total of $2,055. Just note you'll pay that $399 upfront.
As a comparison, if you bought your iPhone 16 (128GB) on a plan from Vodafone on a 24-month repayment term with Vodafone's cheapest postpaid plan - $49 for 50GB - you'd end up paying $2574.96.
If we look at the iPhone 16 Pro (128GB), it normally costs $1,799 outright. Paired with the 150GB BYOD plan you'd pay $799 upfront, plus $1656 over 24 months in plan fees for a total cost of $2,455. If you bought the same device from Vodafone on a 24-month repayment term with Vodafone's $49 plan the total cost would end up being $2974.80.
If you're happy to pay some of the cost upfront, this in-store deal works out to be better than Vodafone's mainline iPhone 16 deal. With that deal, you can save $1,299 on any iPhone 16 by signing up for the $79 promo plan (with 600GB of data) and staying connected for 36 months.
It does work out more expensive in the long term but allows you to get your hands on the new iPhone 16 without paying any upfront.
Vodafone's $79 deal lets you get your hands on the new iPhone 16 without paying any money upfront but it does work out more expensive in the long term. With the cheapest iPhone model, you end up spending $2,944.08 over 36 months with the $79 promo plan compared to just $2,055 over two years with Apple's in-store deal.
Here are Vodafone's 36-month iPhone 16 plans:
While Apple's in-store deal is available until the offer is withdrawn, Vodafone's mainline deal is only available until October 10.
If you go the Apple Store route you can save more if you opt to trade-in your old device. According to data from Kantar, 48% of Australian iPhone users who purchased a phone in the three months to December 2023 did nothing with their old device.
Customers trading in their old device at the Apple Store or online can get credit in the form of an Apple Gift Card or apply the value towards the cost of their new device.

As an example, you can get as much as up to $560 value from a two-year-old device like the iPhone 14 Plus. If you choose to upgrade to a new device rather than choosing a gift card you may also get additional value in the form of a New Device Offer.
Telstra, Optus and Vodafone all also allow you to trade in your old device. Exact credit varies by trade-in partner and the condition of your device so it's worth comparing your options.
