If you want to skip the line, but still get one as soon as possible, you can pre-order an iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max in advance of the September 20 release date. Doing so will lock in your handset and skip those long launch-day lines.
Vodafone in particular is aiming for early buyers, offering $1,299 credit towards any iPhone 16 model if you sign up to the $79 promo plan (on top of your phone plan repayments).
What are my options to pre-order the iPhone 16?
An iPhone 16 pre-order can be done as an outright purchase via the Apple store and Apple's Amazon page, or you can pre-order one as part of a phone plan through Optus, Telstra, or Vodafone.
To get you started, here's a few things to consider:
- Do you want it outright or on a plan? You can pre-order an iPhone 16 from a mobile provider as part of a phone plan or as a one-off purchase
- Select which model and storage size iPhone 16 you want to pre-order, and consider any extras you might want
- Compare providers and plans to find the best deal and availability for your iPhone 16 pre-order. Even if you've purchased it outright, you might be able to save money by switching to a cheaper provider or plan.
Pre-ordering the iPhone 16 on a plan
To pre-order an iPhone 16 on a plan, your options are limited to Optus, Telstra, and Vodafone. Each telco offers all iPhone 16 models on 12, 24 and 36-month contracts. The longer the contract, the less you’ll pay each month.
All three providers charge the same amount over your plan length for each iPhone 16 model, give or take a few dollars. The real price difference comes down to the plan inclusions – for the most part, this means data-for-dollar value. But each also offers additional perks and different levels of national mobile coverage.
If you pre-order any iPhone 16 on Vodafone's $79 promo plan, you'll get $1,299 in credit toward the price of the phone over the course of 36 months, which takes the form of a $36 discount off your monthly bill. But if you leave within 36 months, you your final bill will include the full price of the phone remaining.
You also won't see the discount reflected in your final price when you reach checkout. But Vodafone will apply the credit each month to your monthly bill.
The monthly credit makes it cheaper than Vodafone's smallest plan by $6 per month. If you want an iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro or 16 Pro Max on a phone plan, this is your cheapest option right now – unless you leave before the end of the contract term.
The deal is available until October 10. If you pre-order by September 19, you get 600GB per month on your Promo plan. From September 20, you still receive the $1,299 credit, but only get 200GB data per month.
You can check out at the Vodafone iPhone 16 deals on its Promo plan below. You'll need to mentally subtract $36 per month from the listed monthly price because Vodafone is offering the discount as "credit" and not as a dollar amount.
36-month iPhone 16 plans compared
A 36-month repayment period means the cheapest per-month bills, and it's the most popular option on WhistleOut for most phones.
Below are the cheapest 36-month plans in our database from each provider from which you can pre-order an iPhone 16 Pro Max, 16 Pro, 16 Plus, or iPhone 16. We've left out the Vodafone Promo plan deal because its contract works differently from a standard plan. So keep that in mind when comparing these offerings:
24-month iPhone 16 plans compared
Monthly fees for a 24-month repayment cost more than the 36-month period, but are still half that of a 12-month contracts.

What's the cheapest way to pre-order an iPhone 16?
Whether you pre-order your iPhone 16 on a mobile plan or for outright purchase, you’ll end up paying roughly the same for the phone itself – barring any special deals that might pop up. The cost difference comes from the mobile plan portion of your overall spend (i.e. your monthly data allowance, network connection, and additional plan perks).
An outright purchase means you can sign up to a cheap phone plan from a smaller provider. In the long run, this is will save you more money – you pay the same for the phone itself, and less per month on your mobile plan.
These smaller providers buy access to the Telstra, Optus, or Vodafone networks and re-sell it for cheap. Known as Mobile Virtual Service Operators (MVNOs), they keep costs down by having fewer overheads, such as low advertising budgets or offering no-frills plans.
MVNOs offer SIM-only plans, so you have to bring your own handset. If you purchased your iPhone 16 outright, that’s you. But buying an iPhone 16 outright is a big initial expense, so it's not for everyone.
Signing up to an iPhone 16 phone plan from Optus, Vodafone, or Telstra means you can pay it off in monthly instalments over 12, 24, or 36 months. Spreading the cost out can make your budget more manageable, but the monthly phone plans from these three major providers are usually more expensive than from MVNOs.
Below are the cheapest mobile plans in our database of 28 mobile providers, with various minimum monthly data allowances. To help account for introductory discounts, we've ordered them by total cost over 24 months:
When will I get my iPhone 16 pre-order?
If you pre-order your iPhone 16 between 10pm AEST on September 13 and the September 20 release date, you should be among the first people in Australia to receive one. Just keep in mind that wait times for more popular models can blow out quickly, so if you want to get an iPhone 16 as early as possible, pre-order sooner than later.
People living in major metropolitan areas may very well get theirs on release day, though it might take a couple of days longer than that. If you live further out, it can depend on your location.
Can I still get an iPhone 16 if I don't pre-order?
Of course! It’ll probably just take a little longer. You could always brave the release day lines at an Apple store, but you shouldn't have to wait too long if you buy one online through a mobile provider or retailer.
