Google has locked in a date to show off its next fleet of flagship smartphones.
As per an invitation sent out to US-based tech media including The Verge and Android Central earlier this week, the company's next 'Made by Google' event will take place on August 20 in New York. This lines up roughly with the timeline for last year's Google devices, which were announced in August 2024.
Those who can't make it out will be able to watch the event when it streams via YouTube. For Aussies looking to tune in live, the difference in time zones translates to a start time of around 3am AEST on August 21.
At this stage, Google is keeping it cryptic when it comes to the contents of its next hardware showcase. Based on the invite, it's safe to expect to new "Pixel phones, watches, buds, and more".
If Google's incoming holiday lineup roughly matches the size and shape of last year's, then it's safe to expect a new baseline Pixel, a pair of Pixel Pro models plus a follow-up to last year's Pixel 9 Pro Fold. A fourth-generation Pixel Watch and a set of Pixel Buds are also rumoured to be on the cards.
Given that last year's Pixel 9 series delivered a significant refresh in the overall design language of Google's premium phones, it's not super clear what consumers should expect from this year's devices, which will mark the tenth generation of Google's Pixel hardware.
Beyond the debut of the Tensor G5 processing said to be powering Google's next generation of devices, the only other guarantee here is that we'll get some mention of Gemini and AI. A splashy and dramatic iPhone X-inspired overhaul isn't entirely out of the question, though it would be a little out of character for the company involved. We'll have to wait until next month to find out.
