If you're not fussed about owning the latest and greatest iPhone but still want an iPhone, Telstra is flogging off 2015's iPhone 6s for cheap: $499 will get you a 32GB iPhone 6s on a prepaid plan with one free $30 recharge.
Since the phone is being sold on as a prepaid device, it's locked to Telstra's network, which means you won't be able to take it to another provider (in Australia and overseas) without forking out a bit of extra cash. If you want to unlock your shiny new iPhone 6s within the first six months, you're looking at an $80 fee. If you're happy to wait, the fee gets cut to $25 after six months. After two years, you'll be able to unlock the phone for free.
While the iPhone 6s is a little over three years old now, it's still being supported by Apple. In fact, the recently released iOS 12 was explicitly designed to speed up older devices. We don't know how long Apple will keep updating the iPhone 6s' software, but it should still see a couple of major software updates. And hey, it still has a headphone jack!
Telstra's prepaid plans currently come with a 22GB Data Bank bonus on your first five recharges. These plans let you save up to 200GB of unused data in between recharges, which can then be used at a later date when you've exhausted your standard inclusion - provided you have an active recharge. To get this bonus, you'll need to make your first recharge by February 5 next year, all other recharges by June 30.
