gomo, the budget Optus telco brand will shut up shop for good on December 15, 2023.
The process will be completed in two steps. From November 15, the autorecharge feature will turn off. Existing customers won't be able to recharge and you'll be able to use any remaining credit until your current inclusions run out.
On December 15, all gomo services will be officially closed. gomo customers will need to switch to a new mobile provider before then if they want to keep their phone number.
gomo says it has sent every existing customer a first-month fee-free offer from Catch Connect which also utilises the Optus network. A Catch Connect SIM and instructions on how to switch have been posted to every existing customer.
Here's what the Catch offer looks like depending on which gomo plan you're on:
| Plan | Current gomo inclusions | New Catch Connect plan (first month free) |
|---|---|---|
| $15 for 8GB | Unlimited standard talk and text 200GB data rollover 30-days expiry No-lock in contract |
$15 for 18GB Unlimited standard talk and text No rollover 30-days expiry No-lock in contract |
| $25 for 40GB | Unlimited standard talk and text Unlimited standard international calls to 15 destinations 200GB data rollover 30-days expiry No-lock in contract |
$25 for 50GB Unlimited standard talk and text No international calls No rollover 30-days expiry No-lock in contract |
| $35 for 60GB | Unlimited standard talk and text
Unlimited standard international calls to 15 destinations 200GB data rollover 30-days expiry No-lock in contract |
$25 for 50GB Unlimited standard talk and text No international calls No rollover 30-days expiry No-lock in contract |
If you take up the Catch offer you lose data rollover but get extra data on the two cheapest plans. Customers on the more expensive $35 gomo plan are essentially bumped down to the $25 plan. If you had gomo for international calling you lose that as well.
Customers who haven't received a SIM yet can contact gomo via the app or web chat to organise one to be sent out.
If you're looking to switch and want to know your options you can compare plans the cheapest plans from $20 on the Optus network:
gomo first indicated that change was coming after it withdrew from offering plans to new customers back in July. The website said "gomo is undergoing some changes in the coming months" and gave no indication of what those changes might be or when it would return.
The smaller telco was Optus' solution to Telstra budget brand Belong and Vodafone's felix.
Like felix, gomo stepped onto the scene with the value proposition that it was simpler, a mobile plan "without all that hoo-ha" was one way it marketed itself. At the time of its launch it offered just one mobile plan, although it later expanded to offer three.
The one-plan strategy has been difficult for telcos to crack with even felix recently ditching its just one plan philosophy.
