Boost Mobile Founder Peter Adderton says that there are no plans to offer 5G to Boost customers, because the actual benefits of the network are too far off.
This morning, Adderton spoke belligerently about 5G, saying that the network has overpromised, and looks like it will under deliver in the telecommunications sphere.
“5G doesn’t make a difference to the lives of our customers," Adderton said, “we will offer 5G to our customers, when it makes a difference to our customers.”
More reliable video streaming at a higher quality, is the main difference 5G is tipped to make for mobile customers. While the full potential of 5G is unknown, the majority of innovations aren’t expected to mean much to the average smartphone user.
According to Adderton, the 5G roll out has not been driven by the consumer, but by telcos and phone manufacturers. He goes so far as to say that 5G phones are ultimately pricing Boost’s youth demographic out of the market.
This comes in the wake of the Samsung Galaxy S20 launch last week, boasting 5G enabled handsets, coupled with the manufacturer’s most expensive pricing to date.
Adderton says that nothing could make him buy a 5G phone. Or at least, not pay the extra money for a 5G enabled device, alluding to the idea that the average customer probably feels the same.
Boost's network provider Telstra, will be offering 5G network access for free until June 30th, 2020 on applicable devices and plans. After that, customers on Telstra's Small and Medium plans will be able to opt in for $15 per month, while the Large and Extra Large customers will continue to have access to 5G in selected areas.
For the foreseeable future, Boost customers will continue to access Telstra’s 4G and 3G MVNO network across Australia.
