Samsung has slowly started rolling out the Android Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Users in the UK and China are among the first to get the update, and we should start seeing it appear in other markets in the coming months.
New features include improved splitscreen multitasking, revamped notifications, the Note 7’s user interface, and the Note 7’s newer always on display functionality.
In terms of Australian availability, Vodafone has begun testing Nougat for the S7 and S7 Edge, but says it found issues during testing, and is awaiting new software from Samsung. Telstra, Virgin and Optus have yet to publicly confirmed as to whether they're testing the update yet.
The Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, and Galaxy Note 5 are also due to get the update to Android Nougat, but there's currently no given timeline.
Unlike iPhone updates, Android software updates don't simultaneously release to all devices. The process requires the manufacturer - in this case Samsung - to make to Nougat run on its phones, then provide that code to telco partners for testing. As such, when you receive software updates varies depending on which country you bought your phone in, who you bought it from, and whether it was purchased outright or on a contract.
