amaysim plans set to get more expensive from December

amaysim has announced that it will increase the price of three of its prepaid mobile plans in December.

Its cheapest 28-day recharge will see a $4 increase with no extra data while its two long expiry plans will increase by $70 and $80 respectively. Each of the long expiry plans will receive an increase in data.

Here's a summary of amaysim's current 28-day and long-expiry plans alongside the changes:

Existing customers with auto-recharge set-up will not be affected. A spokesperson for amaysim told WhistleOut "There are no price changes for existing customers, whether on long-expiry or 28-day expiry plans, and these only come into effect for new customers on the mobile plans launching in December 2023."

amaysim was one of the few telcos that didn't increase its prices at the start of the new financial year in July. Instead, amaysim added 5G with capped speeds to some of its plans.

Are amaysim's long expiry plans good value for money?

Long expiry or 365-day expiry plans do provide good value for money if you find you're paying for more data than you need on a monthly SIM-only plan. This is because a long expiry plan is almost like buying data in bulk.

You're usually getting a good deal if you're paying $1 or less per GB of data.

Here's how amaysim's current long expiry plans breakdown:

$170 for 150GB: You get 12.5GB per month, you pay $1.13 per GB overall
$220 for 200GB: You get 16.6GB per month, you pay $1.10 per GB overall

amaysim's new long expiry plans break down like this:

$240 for 200GB: You get 16.6GB per month, you pay $1.20 per GB overall
$300 for 240GB: You get 20GB per month, you pay $1.25 per GB overall

With the new plans, you may be getting more data but your dollar per GB costs go up.
