More news from IFA Berlin! Alcatel has unveiled three upcoming, all-new devices - including a just-for-kids smartwatch that's sure to appeal to overprotective, tech-hip mama and papa bears. If knowing your kid's whereabouts 24/7 seems reasonable to you - or your child is still too young for a smartphone - read on.
The MOVETIME Family Watch
Alcatel's MOVETIME Family Watch is slated for an early 2018 release, and is the company's first kid-friendly wearable. The 3G smartwatch is designed to provide peace of mind to helicopter parents everywhere, featuring integrated GPS capabilities as well as call and text functionality.
Strap it on your kiddo's wrist, and you'll be able to track their location with both indoor and outdoor positioning, plus receive geo-fencing alerts if your child leaves a pre-determined area. The watch also comes with an SOS button in case of emergency; when SOS is activated, the device will transmit a call for help and alert parents of their child's location.
The MOVETIME comes with a variety of colourful watchface and wristband options, and kids can add their friends via Bluetooth. Children can play built-in games, send emoji to added friends, or receive to-do lists and reminders from Mum or Dad, and the watch itself is IP67 water and dust-resistant with up to two days of battery life.
The Alcatel A7
Alcatel has also announced two new smartphones are on the way: the Alcatel A7 and the IDOL 5S. At $299, the A7 is a cheaper option, and features a 5.5-inch display and a modern, premium finish. You'll get a huge 4000mAh battery with fast charge support, plus 32GB of storage and 3GB RAM.
Available in 2018, the A7 includes a 16-megapixel rear camera with ultrafast phase detection autofocus, plus a wide f/120 aperture, and an 8-megapixel selfie camera in front. With an octa-core processor and 4G LTE connectivity, the A7 offers fast downloads and smooth processing, and the device will run Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box.
The IDOL 5S
If you've got a little more to spend, the IDOL 5S is priced at $349 and will also be available early next year. The 4G LTE phone features a 5.2-inch display under Corning 2.5D curved glass, encased in a slim metal design.
The Android Nougat device comes with a 12-megapixel rear camera with dual tone LED flash, ultrafast phase detection autofocus and a bunch of specialised modes and filters, including Cinematograph (for creating still photos with moving elements). In front, you'll get an 8-megapixel camera, with Face Beauty and Selfie Panorama features.
The IDOL 5S includes an Octa-core processor, 32GB of storage, and 3GB RAM, plus a 2850mAh battery. It will also feature microSD card support, and features a built-in 'Now' key to instantly launch pre-programmed apps or tasks with a single touch.
