Vodafone today announced that it will launch Voice over LTE (VoLTE) on its 4G network before Christmas, an improvement with a number of key customer benefits.
Unlike many technology abbreviations, VoLTE actually describes pretty well what is in store for Vodafone customers. Currently, voice calls are placed over the 3G network, but after the upgrade calls will be placed on the 4G network.
Using the upgrade will require customers to have a compatible handset. Vodafone says the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+ and Note 5 are the first devices available, but more will come next year.
Whether you place a call on the 3G or 4G networks may not seem like a big deal, from a customer perspective, but there are a number of advantages to come with this upgrade.
Firstly, the faster data transmission should improve the quality of calls, pacing for the way for enhancements beyond what we currently know as HD Voice.
Secondly, you will be able to multitask with 4G data during a call. If you’ve ever searched for cinema times or a restaurant to eat at while on the phone with your date, then you’ll appreciate how great the faster speeds will be.
Vodafone will launch VoLTE in December and plans to roll it out to all post-paid and pre-paid customers in 2016.
It won't be alone in rolling out the new tech, though. Telstra has started a trial with plans to expand its VoLTE rollout shortly.
