If you're still rocking an iPhone 5, you need to update to iOS 10.3.4 before November 3. If you don't, key features like the App Store, iCloud, email, and web browsing will cease to work due to a GPS time rollover issue.
iOS 10.3.4 was originally released in July for older iPhones and iPad models. Without the update, an iPhone 5 won't be able to maintain accurate GPS location data from November 3, or use functions that rely on the correct date and time.
If you've still got an iPhone 5 and it isn't running iOS 10.3.4 by 10am November 3 (AESD), you'll need to back and up and restore it using a Mac or a PC to get it running again.
To check what version of iOS your iPhone 5 is running, follow these steps:
- Open the Settings app
- Tap General
- Tap About
- Look for the number next to Software Version
This should read 10.3.4. If this isn't the case, follow these steps to run a software update:
- Open the Settings app
- Tap General
- Tap Software Update
- Tap Download or Install Now
However, if you've still got an iPhone 5, you may want to think about upgrading. The iPhone 5 is now seven years old, and is no longer supported by Apple. It no longer receives major operating system updates, and minor updates - such as this one - are only released in the event of system-breaking bugs.
