Telstra has revised the monthly cost of most of its handset range, cutting up to $10 per month off some handsets, just a week after Optus announces competitive new plans.
Phones from all manufacturers, including Apple and Samsung, have been discounted, with many now $0 on a $70 plan or higher.
Some of the highlights include the Apple iPhone 5C 32GB and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for $0 on a $70 Mobile Accelerate Plan, and the Google Nexus 5 now $0 on Telstra’s $55 Plan — the telco’s cheapest post-paid offer.
In total 19 handsets have been reduced in price as of today. All of these changes are now reflected in the WhistleOut search tool.
Optus who?
It might just be coincidence, but Telstra’s price cuts come a week after Optus announced major plan revisions, unveiling its new My Plan Plus pricing options.
While being good value in their own right, the new Optus plans shine a light on just how out of touch Telstra’s current plan pricing is with the rest of the market. For example, if you want a phone plan with unlimited calls and 3GB data, Optus will set you up for $80 per month. The same plan inclusions on the Telstra network cost $130 per month — a 60% price difference.
Lowering its handset prices may help Telstra seem more affordable, but considering it is so much more expensive, it might be time for the big T to rethink how much access to its service is actually worth to regular punters, like you and I.
