Telstra customers with an iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or iPhone X are unable to get network connectivity on their devices following a newly released software update. The update - iOS 16.7.13 - prevents those devices from connecting to the Telstra network, including calls to Triple Zero.
In a post on the Telstra blog, the company says Triple Zero calls will automatically connect to an alternative mobile network if one is available, provided "SOS calls" appears in the top-right-hand corner of the screen. It may take up to a minute or more for the call to connect.
Telstra says it is working on this as a priority with Apple, and will continue to share updates as it has them.
Apple has paused the software updates during the investigation, so iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or iPhone X owners who have yet to upgrade their operating system shouldn't have any issues.
There is now a fix available for anyone who has already upgraded their iPhone to iOS 16.7.13. To install the update, follow these steps:
- Connect the impacted iPhone to WiFi
- Tap Settings, then General, then About
- Accept the carrier settings update by tapping OK
- Confirm the update installed by going to Settings, then General, then About and make sure it says "Telstra 54.1" next to Service Provider
Apple ended mainline software support updates for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X in 2023, alongside the release of the iPhone 14.
