If you're looking for family mobile plans with Telstra, Upfront plans are the best place to start. Find out how you can bundle your family's mobile plans and get access to data sharing with our everything you need to know guide below.
How do Telstra data share plans work?
Telstra data-sharing plans are pretty simple. You just need to use the same Telstra account to sign up for each SIM. If you do this, the data from each will automatically be shared between accounts. This is included as standard on all of the provider’s Upfront mobile or data-only plans, with up to 20 plans able to be bundled under a single account.
An important thing to remember with this setup is that the collective data allowance will reset on the same data each month. However, if you disconnect or cancel one of your bundled plans before that data then the data allowance of that service will be subtracted from your shared pool immediately.
Which Telstra family plans have data sharing?
Although Telstra’s Upfront plans aren’t explicitly marketed as family plans, the ability to bundle them can make them a good fit for families looking to share their data allowance and consolidate the costs involved into one monthly bill.
One thing to keep in mind here is that, unlike traditional postpaid plans, Telstra’s Upfront plans are paid as the name suggests - upfront from the first day of the billing cycle, rather than at the end.
Here are Telstra's SIM-only Upfront plans:
All of these plans come with 30 minutes of international calls to all destinations and access to Telstra's 5G network. Each plan comes with an allotted amount of data, which ultimately goes into a pool for all connected accounts to use. If you all happen to run out of data then each SIM will stay connected using unlimited data capped at maximum speeds of 1.5Mbps.
As mentioned above, Telstra customers can pool the data allowance from up to 20 Upfront mobile or mobile broadband plans provided they're on the same account. Data sharing on Telstra Upfront plans is automatically included, so you don’t need to do anything to set it up - it just happens with all eligible devices.
If you’re an existing Telstra prepaid customer and want to share data, you’ll need to switch to an Upfront plan. Otherwise, you won't be able to share data with family members unless you make the swap.
- Less likely to run out of data
- Combine every user onto one bill
- Can potentially save you money
- You'll probably still pay for more data than you need
- Generally only available with more expensive providers
Are Telstra family plan bundles good value?
If you have a Telstra "Essential" Upfront plan or better, Telstra's add-on bundle plan options include a $57 per month mobile plan with 25GB (if you want calls and data), which is designed to give to another family member or a $30 per month mobile broadband plan with 30GB (for data only). For those who need an additional data-only SIM for a secondary device like a tablet, the latter can be a neat option.
By contrast, the former is not particularly competitive. Even if you do like the simplicity of streamlining your services into one bill, you’re paying a hefty premium for the privilege. For comparison, Telstra-owned MVNO Belong is currently offering 100GB for a cheaper $45 per month. If you're committed to keeping all your mobile plans with Telstra, its bundle plans are actually a decent option thanks to data sharing.
Telstra's cheapest Upfront plan is currently $70 per month and includes 50GB of data. If you were paying for two, you'd be looking at $140 per month with a shared data pool of 100GB.
Alternatively, if you take up the $80 per month plan and the bundle plan, you're looking at $137 per month with a shared data allowance of 205GB. While this is only a small saving, you get more than twice the data to share.
Notably, customers can also add a new device with each bundle plan.
How do Telstra family plans compare?
If you're looking for a different telco with data sharing and family plans, the big three telcos are not your only options. Smaller providers, like Belong and ALDI, both operating on the Telstra network have options to help you cut your family's bills. Before we get into it, here's a selection of popular plans from providers with data sharing:
Belong plans with data sharing
Belong, which is owned and operated by Telstra, has an option called data gifting. Customers can send data in 1GB increments to other Belong mobile customers.
This service provider only offers SIM-only plans though so you'll need to have your handset in order to sign up.
Everyday Mobile plans with data sharing
Everyday Mobile now offers data gifting between eligible plans. Customers can gift up to half of their included data per month to other Everyday Mobile customers in 1GB increments. Data gifting is now available on every Everyday Mobile prepaid, long-expiry and postpaid plan.
Tangerine plans with data sharing
Tangerine SIM-only customers can gift up to 50% of their standard monthly data allowance to other Tangerine customers so long as they stick to the minimum data gifting volume of 1GB per transaction.
More plans with data sharing
Because More is another Telstra Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), its data gifting offering mirrors the same Terms and Conditions of Tangerine's data gifting policy.
Customers on SIM-only plans can gift up to half their standard monthly data allowance to other More mobile customers. Gifting amounts are rounded up to the nearest GB per billing period and a minimum data gifting amount of 1GB per transaction applies.
Optus plans with data sharing
In terms of data sharing Optus automatically pools data from every postpaid plan on a single bill. If you have multiple plans on one bill, they'll all have access to the total cumulative data allowance.
Here are the Optus SIM-only plans with data sharing:
Vodafone plans with data sharing
Vodafone lets you pool data from up to 10 postpaid plans on a single bill. Five of these can be mobile plans, and the remainder can be mobile broadband or tablet plans.
While Vodafone doesn't have family plans, you can bundle up to five eligible postpaid services for a total 20% discount on your monthly bill. Each additional service you add to your account will get you a 5% discount, so not only can you share your data but you can save on them as well.
ALDI mobile plans with data sharing
Also operating on the Telstra network, ALDI Mobile has a range of Family Plans that support up to six users. At the time of writing, these are ALDI's family plans:
- 55GB + 50GB of bonus data for $55 per 30-day recharge with up to two users
- 100GB + 100GB of bonus data for $95 per 30-day recharge with up to four users
- 150GB + 150GB of bonus of data for $125 per 30-day recharge with up to six users
Data is shared between every user on these plans. These plans also include unlimited talk and text.
Yomojo mobile plans with data sharing
Yomojo is another telco offering family plans, but with a slight twist on how customers can save.
Customers with multiple Yomojo prepaid plans receive discounts, which are calculated on a sliding scale as follows:
- Two bundled SIM plans = 5% saving
- Three bundled SIM plans = 7.5% saving
- Four bundled SIM plans = 10% saving
- Five bundled SIM plans = 12.5% saving
- Six bundled SIM plans = 15% saving
Customers can build their own bundle by adding as many or as few SIMs as their family needs while mixing and matching a selection of its unlimited plans, which all come with unlimited text, data and 4G access on a 30-day plan. However, data-sharing is not available with this bundle option.
Here are plans from Yomojo, which are eligible for bundling:
Alternatives to data sharing: cheap SIM plans
Data sharing can be a great tool for families, but bundling a bunch of plans from a major telco like Telstra can get pretty pricey quickly. It might be worth just looking at cheap SIM plans instead.
With how extreme data allowances are these days, and a range of small providers vying for your business, you very well may save quite a bit of money simply by dividing your bills.
According to extrapolated data from the ACCC, the average Australian uses 18GB of data per month on postpaid plans or just 9.7GB on prepaid ones. Below we have the cheapest plans with at least 30GB of data available through our database, but keep in mind that if you're a skint data spender, then you may not even need that much data to get by.
