Telstra is the first major local mobile provider to support Apple’s “Apple Watch For Your Kids” functionality. The feature allows parents to set up a cellular Apple Watch for a child with an independent number, but managed through the parent’s iPhone.
On top of an Apple Watch, Apple Watch For Your Kids requires a mobile plan. Telstra’s Watch plan is billed at $20 per month, and requires customers to have an Upfront plan to order it. The plan includes 2GB of data, unlimited talk and text, and 30 minutes of international calls. On top of 2GB of data, the Watch plan has access to shared data from other plans on the same account.
While Telstra is the only telco supporting Apple Watch For Your Kids locally, it isn’t the only option. eSIM provider BetterRoaming sells plans specifically designed for Apple Watch For Your Kids at $11.99 per month. These come with unlimited data, talk, and text. Alternatively, customers can pay $99 upfront for a year's worth of service. That works out to be $8.25 per month. BetterRoaming also offers a seven-day free trial.
Apple Watch For Your Kids is ostensibly designed so that parents can give their child an Apple Watch as their first connected device, rather than a phone. The child’s Apple Watch is paired to the parent’s iPhone, but has its own phone number and Apple ID. It won’t receive phone calls or notifications intended for the parent.
Naturally, Apple Watch For Your Kids has extensive parental controls. Parents can choose certain contacts that can text or call the child’s Apple Watch, they can see their child’s location through Find My, and there are “Schooltime” and do not disturb modes that can be scheduled during school hours and sleepy hours.
Apple Watch For Your Kids works with any cellular Apple Watch from the Series 4 and up, and SE and up, including Ultra. Parents need an iPhone 16s or later running iOS 14 or later. A single iPhone can be paired with up to five Apple Watches.
