TPG Mobile customers may soon experience a shift in coverage, with TPG and Vodafone announcing a new wholesale partnership today.
Starting immediately, the mobile back-end of the TPG Mobile service will be powered by the Vodafone 4G network, rather than the Optus 4G network as it is now. Customers will be moved over to the new service right away.
TPG will still operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) meaning it will still maintain its subscriber base, including sales and service responsibilities.
As part of this agreement, TPG has committed to a major investment in improving the Vodafone 4G network, with plans to spend $1 billion installing a new ‘dark fibre network’ which will connect to 3,000 Vodafone mobile cell sites over the next 15 years. This will significantly bolster the current Vodafone network footprint with extra capacity, and should mean a more reliable experience with room to grow.
This dark fibre network will also mean the Vodafone network will be ready for an upgrade to a 5G network standard when the technology becomes commercially viable.
