The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge finally have an Australian release date: April 10. Preorders begin online this afternoon at 5pm. Both phones will hit Aussie shelves on the same day, although not with the same price tag.

Regretfully, Australian vendors will not offer the attractive blue or green models shown off at Mobile World Congress (MWC). Instead, only the black and white versions will be available.

The ‘flat’ S6 will begin at $999 for the 32GB option, climbing all the way to $1299 for 128GB.

The S6 Edge will start higher at $1149 for 32GB and end at a whopping $1449 for 128GB.

Not as expensive as they sound

Aussies may not be used to these kinds of price tags on phones, but that’s going to change. Last month, the entire iPhone range went up overnight. Now the 16GB iPhone 6 will run you the same $999 (up from $869) as the 32GB flat Galaxy S6, despite having half the storage.

The 32GB HTC One M9 debuted in Australia a little over a week ago with a price tag of $1099 – a full $100 more than the flat S6.

These new high prices are thanks to the weak Aussie dollar and you can bet they’ll stick around. Even if the AU dollar regains its former strength, once retailers feel that Aussies have accepted the higher pricing scheme they’ll want to keep it up as long as they can.

Telstra Plans

Telstra has its regular range of four plans going for the GS6 and GS6 Edge. The smallest plan is probably not worth your time, considering the next plan up is just $4 more for considerably more data. The 128GB model is currently out of stock.
