Samsung today announced local pricing and availability for the Galaxy A16 5G, its new entry-tier device. The phone is available now and priced at $349 outright, but Optus is already discounting it.
Customers who take up the Galaxy A16 with an Optus postpaid mobile plan can get it for $1 per month on a 36-month plan or $1.50 per month on a 24-month plan. Either way, that effectively means paying just $36 for the phone.
Of course, the $1 or $1.50 per month is added to your plan fee. Optus' cheapest postpaid plan is $52 per month so you're looking at either $53 or $53.50 per month.

While buying the Galaxy A16 5G on a plan does negate the cost of the phone, buying it outright and pairing it with a cheaper SIM-only plan can represent a saving in the long run.
For example, you'd be spending $1284 over a 24-month period on Optus' cheapest SIM-only plan. If you wanted to stick with a 50GB allowance, you could get a 50GB plan from TPG or iiNet for $17.50 for the first month and $35 per month thereafter. Over 24 months, you'd have spent $735 and $349 for the Galaxy A16 5G outright, for a total of $1,084.

If you don't need a 50GB plan, you could reduce your spend even further.
In terms of the phone itself, the Galaxy A16 5G is fairly conventional but has a few standout features. It has IP54 splash-resistance which isn't common at the price point, and Samsung is promising six years of operating system and security updates. Most phones in this price bracket only get two years of operating system upgrades and three years of security.
Other key specifications include a 6.7-inch 1080p+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ CPU, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage, and a 5,000mAh battery. There's a 50MP primary camera, 5MP ultra-wide camera, and 2MP depth camera on the back, and a 13MP selfie camera on the front.
