Australians will start seeing text messages from "unverified" senders from today, thanks to a new initiative from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) designed to make it easier to spot scams and spam. This is known as the SMS Sender ID register.
If businesses and organisations want to send customers an SMS with their name at the top of a message (known as a branded sender ID), then they must register via ACMA’s SMS Sender ID Register page.
Messages from unregistered sender IDs will appear as "unverified", and will be grouped in a single message thread. This means that even if the business you ordered a package from might be legit, it’ll be lumped in with every other scam message if a business has yet to register or is still waiting to be approved.
Texts sent from a registered business or organisation will appear as usual under their chosen sender ID, though their details on the Australian Business Register (ABR) must be up to date.
If you think you’ve received a scam message, report it to ScamWatch.
