You can already preorder the iPhone 6 on Telstra, Optus and Vodafone plans, but how does it compare price-wise to its biggest competitor? Apple has a reputation for fronting the most expensive tech in town, but this time around the savings of turning to Samsung aren’t quite what they once were.

We’ve picked out the more attractive plans from each carrier and compared how much you’ll pay for the new iPhone 6 to the already vastly-popular Galaxy S5.

Our Telstra picks are the $70 plan and the $95 plan. The first will get you 1.5GB of data, $700 of credit for calls and MMS, unlimited national SMS and a choice between either an extra 1GB – making 2.5GB total – or $1000 credit for $1700 total.

The next plan up, the $95 plan, charges $0 extra for the phone itself. This time there’s 2.5GB of data and $900 credit with unlimited SMS. Once again you can choose between an added 1GB or $1000 credit to add to your plan for no extra cost.

iPhone 6

On the Telstra $70 plan, you’ll pay a total of $81 per month once the $11 iPhone charge is added on. That comes to a minimum spend of $1944 over the contract’s two years.

The $95 plan features no cost added for the phone itself and comes to $2280 over two years.

Galaxy S5

The Galaxy S5 on the $70 plan is only $7 per month, coming to $77 for a total minimum spend of $1848.

On the $95 plan there is also no added cost phone costs, meaning you’ll pay the same for an iPhone or for a Galaxy S5 if you take this option.

Winner:

The Galaxy S5 can save you up to $96 over your contract if you take the $70 plan. Once you go higher you’ll pay the same no matter what you choose.

Optus’ most popular plan is its $60 My Plan Plus plan, which usually offers 2GB of data but has been upped to 2.5GB until November 2. The $80 My Plan Plus is where the data is. Usually offering 3GB, until the November 2 cut-off you can get a whopping 5GB.

Both of these plans offer unlimited calls, texts and SMS within Australia.

iPhone 6

On the $60 plan, the iPhone will run you $18 per month for a total of $78. That’s $1872 over two years.

The $80 plan features no handset repayment, totalling $1920 over two years.

Galaxy S5

The GS5 is only $12 on the $60 plan, coming to $72 per month and $1728 over two years.

The $80 plan, once again, will cost the same $1920 over the contract thanks to its $0 in handset repayments.

Winner:

The Galaxy S5 represents a significant saving of $144 on the $60 plan. Once again there is no difference on the higher option.

Currently Vodafone only offers the iPhone 6 on its Red Plans. These all feature 2 months of unlimited data use (offer ends November 1), 300 minutes of overseas calls, unlimited national calls and unlimited text/MMS both here and to overseas numbers.

The $70 Red Plan has 3GB of data, and the $80 plan is 4GB.

iPhone 6

The iPhone 6 is just $4 on the $70 Red Plan, for a total of $74 per month and $1776 over the contract.

The $80 plan charges no repayment fee and is $1920 over two years.

Galaxy S5

Interestingly, the GS5 is $5 on the $70 Red Plan, coming to $75 per month and $1800 over two years.

Once again the $80 Red Plan incurs no additional charges and is $1920 over 24 months.

Winner:

This time the iPhone 6 is the winner, albeit by only $24 over two years on the $70 Red Plan. Still, it’s nice to see Apple win a hand or two in the pricing war every now and again.

Virgin is currently offering a crazy 2GB of bonus data on its post-paid plans if you re-contract or switch from a non-Optus network. Basically, anyone that is on a post-paid contract and isn't an Optus subscriber is eligible.

You'll need to act quickly, though. The offer is only good until the 19th of October.

If this includes you, then the $30 plan is a pretty good deal. Being a lower-tier plan the phone payments are quite high, but you still get a lot of data compared to what you pay. Once the 2GB of data is tacked on, you get 2.3GB per month for a very affordable fee. Unfortunately, you'll still only get $300 credit for calls, texts and MMS.

After that, we'd skip the next plan up and go straight to the $60 plan, which usually includes 2GB but on the deal is 4GB. This time around your credit is $700, which is more than the average is likely to use within a month.

iPhone 6

The iPhone is $25 on the $30 plan, making for $55 per month and $1320 over 24 months.

On the $60 plan it is $14, for $74 per month and $1776 over the life of the contract.

Galaxy S5

The Galaxy S5 is $27 on the $30 plan, coming to $57 per month and $1368 in total.

On the $60 plan it is only $5, making $65 per month and $1560 over the life of the plan.

Winner(s):

If the cheaper plan sounds like your kind of deal, and you're eligible for the bonus data, then the iPhone 6 will actually cost you $48 less over your contract.

Things are pretty different once you move on up. The Galaxy S5 is significantly cheaper on the $60 plan and will save you a full $216 over the life of your contract. If you like big data, or aren't eligible for the bonus 2GB, then this is definitely something you should consider seriously.
