Optus has announced that its existing mobile and internet customers will need to pay for its Optus Sport streaming service starting from August 1.
Since its inception, free Optus Sport subscriptions have been included on the majority of its phone and NBN plans. Now, customers who want to keep using the service will be billed $6.99 per month. This change will apply to all existing Optus customers, in addition to new subscribers.
If you're a customer currently getting Optus Sport for free, Optus will email you about the changes in the coming weeks, along with information about how to unsubscribe. As part of the changes, your Optus Sport subscription will be moved to Optus' streaming management platform - SubHub - and the fees will automatically be added to your account.
Optus is also increasing the price of Optus Sport for customers who don't have a plan with the telco. From August 1, the new monthly fee will be $24.99 per month, up from $14.99 per month. Alternatively, customers can pay $199 for an annual pass.
This puts Optus Sport roughly in line with Kayo, which starts at $25 per month. Kayo also recently increased the price of its basic two-stream plan, taking it from $25 per month to $27.50 per month. It did however introduce a new entry-level option at the $25 price point that allows just one simultaneous stream.
